Vitalik Buterin wants to replace the ETHEREUM – Cryptomode
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has suggested a major change in the basis of the network implementation environment: the long-term ETHEREUM virtual replacement (EVM) with the RISC-V Open Source Group structure.
Potterin said, the goal is to enhance the efficiency of the ETHEREUM implementation layer, and the ability to expand, significantly.
It is no longer useful
EVM has always been in the heart of the ETHEREUM smart contracts, which works as a major component not only for Blockchain itself but also for countless Blockchains and Rollups layer -2 that are designed to be compatible with EVM.
But Burin is now Argue The EVM may reach its architectural borders. In a recent publication at the Ethereum Core Developer Forum, I suggested that the shift to RIC-V could result in gains of up to 100x for certain operations, especially in generating the proof of zero knowledge.
Unlike EVM, RISC-V is a uniform and friendly structure designed to be simple, extensive and effective. Its adoption in Ethereum, as BUTERIN claims to complicate the implementation layer, improve performance in ZKEVM that proves, enhances support for encryption processes thanks to the support of original education.
It is worth noting that this will not mean giving up hardness or current EVM contracts.
BUTERIN is perceived by a double VM strategy, allowing the hardness symbol to translate into RISC-V BITECode. There are also discussions on keeping a backward compatibility by running both EVM and RISC-V contracts side by side or create a RIC-V translator for old contracts.
Wind time for ethereum
Burin’s proposal comes at a time when ETH is wrestling with multiple challenges.
The transaction fees decreased to its lowest levels in several years, the network activity has decreased, and competition chains such as Solana and SUI have gained mainly performance and developer’s adoption. With many users and developers turning into Layer-2S, fears are increasing on generating ETHEREUM revenues in the long term and the importance of the market.

While the Ethereum consensus layer continues to develop through initiatives such as the beam chain and other research projects, the implementation layer remains the bottleneck. Burin believes that “radical change” such as RISC-V can open the next level of efficiency and expansion.
