While Conclave 2025 gathered under the mural in the Sistine Church, not only the Cardinals choose the new Pope; They inherit financial chaos decades.
Pope Francis has spent his last years of fighting to decipher financial affairs in the Vatican, fighting the deficit, lack of pensions, and deep resistance from within. Despite its reforms, the Church remains a paradox: it is a microstate microscopic in the invaluable art and global donations, however it depends on the museum’s tickets to pay bills.
How does the Vatican earn money?
Financial affairs pass through the Vatican through two distinguished entities. The Vatican city is the material house of the Pope and the iconic monuments of the Church. It brings money through tourism: admission to the museum, the tours accompanied by guides, and a fixed flow of revenues from coins, stamps and souvenirs.
The Apostolic Chair, on the other hand, is the global administrative and diplomatic engine of the Church. It is mainly funded by Pence Pence, a tradition in the eighteenth century in which Catholics contribute to the charitable efforts of Baba. The Apostolic Chair also invests in real estate, stocks and bonds, adherence to the values of the church and avoid industries that contradict their teachings.
At the center of this is the Vatican Bank, which is officially called the Ectistic Business Institute (IOR). He runs billions of dollars in the origins of clergy, diocese and religious institutions all over the world.
For decades, the bank was immersed in a scandal, from washing allegations to secret accounts and collapsing Shell companies. And in spite of Francis reforms under Pope FrancisIncluding the main forensic audit and the closure of thousands of suspicious accounts, the legacy of secrecy remains.
