“Dream News” for the technology sector, where the United States announces the exemptions of customs tariffs
The United States says that some major technology products, such as smartphones, computers and chip making equipment, will be exempted from the “mutual” customs tariff for President Donald Trump.
Customs and US Border Protection published the list of exemptions late on Friday night. The guidelines seem to exempt products from the primary tariff rate by 10 % of Trump, which applies to most countries, as well as a 145 % tariff for China.
It is welcome news in the technology industry. The exemptions came after the wild week in the global financial markets. The intense trade war between the United States and China planted chaos in both stock and bond markets.
While many technology giants have deep relationships with China, Apple, in particular, is fully known in the country, as it has spent years building a supply chain for its iPhone devices.
In a post on X, Wall Street Dan Evs analyst described the “dream news” exemptions for the sector.
“The United States spoke Big Tech, and the White House has taken the right step in a timely manner. The tremendous relief of shares in the market and technology on Sunday night,” wrote the administrative director of the administrative materials at Wedbush.
“The exemptions come as a great satisfaction with the technology industry and AI,” said technical investor Matt Turk, a partner at the company Versar Capital at “Price Mark Capital”, Business Insider.
“They are the sensory thing that must be done in a series of completely illogical decisions. This was an embarrassing week for America,” he added.
The technology industry may not be clear yet. The White House told an email that Trump is still intending to issue a tariff on some technical products in the future.
It also plans to issue a study in Section 232, an investigation into the impact of imports on national security, on semiconductors, which can determine whether the main technology is subject to definitions as well.
“President Trump has explained that America cannot rely on China to manufacture important technologies such as semiconductors, chips, smartphones and laptops,” White House press secretary Caroline Levit told BI via email. “For this reason, the President has secured trillion dollars from US investment from the largest technology companies in the world, including Apple, TSMC and NVIDIA. In the direction of the president, these companies wander in their manufacture in the United States as soon as possible.”
