SMSHING uses SMS or MMS text messages, while Vishing uses phone calls or voice messages and may include sounds created by AI.
The FBI says that the fraudsters aim to create a relationship and reach personal accounts. They can do this by sending harmful links to their victims under the pretext of switching to a separate messenger platform.
The agency says that the communication information collected through social engineering plans can be used to impersonate information to collect information or obtain money.
“Access to personal or official accounts managed by US officials can be used to target other government officials, or their partners and contacts, using the reliable contact information they get.”
