The art of no deal: an autopsy between Trump and Zelinski

  • Trump is a deals maker. But the Ukraine deal has to forget after a general explosion in the Oval Office.
  • He and Volodimir Zelinski were an extraordinary argument in front of the cameras on Friday.
  • BI asked negotiating experts and resolving the conflict about their opinion on the unprecedented clash.

President Donald Trump designs himself as a deals maker.

But dealing with minerals with Ukraine is now forgetting after its general explosion with the country’s president, Voludmir Zelinski, in the Oval Office.

The clash on the camera provided a rare overview of driving and strategy During one of the highest negotiations.

Negotiation tactics

“Either you will connect or face a deal,” Trump said at the height of the hot exchange, in reference to the American commitment to defend Ukraine. “If we are outside, you will fight her. I don’t think it will be beautiful, but you will fight her.”

Andrea Schneider, an expert in conflict resolution at Karadoso College of Law, told BI that this warning indicates that Trump was not “magic negotiator” some say it is.

“The last thing you are doing is to give the other party all cards,” Schneider said. “Whatever the negotiations, why does Russia give Ukraine anything? Why does Russia give us anything? How can this United States make stronger?”

She said that Trump’s words strengthened Russia’s hand, “which is a kind of mind.”

Cortis Friedel, associate professor and director of the Cooperative Problems Solution Center in Virginia Tech, said the meeting was more about “I” more than accurate negotiation or leadership.

“It seems to me, from the negotiating perspective, that the stakeholders wanted more agreement than they wanted the leaders a deal. Thus, the two parties ended with embarrassment themselves,” Feridel said.

Zelenskyy finally left Washington without signing the deal, which would have given America the ability to reach Ukraine’s metal wealth in exchange for “a long -term financial commitment to the development of Ukraine stable and economically prosperous.”

Zelinski’s departure from Washington was very surprising, and this means overcoming a planned lunch.

“I would like to know if the White House chef has been warned,” Schneider said.

Playing with different rules

At one point of the meeting, Trump suggested that Zelinski was an obstacle to negotiations with Russia because of the “hatred he obtained for Putin.”

With the escalation of tensions, Vice President JD Vance suggested that the Ukrainian leader did not show sufficient gratitude for American aid.

Eileen Babit, a professor who focuses on managing international conflict at Tafs University, said she believes that Vans and Trump’s comment is that Zelinski did not “have any cards played by” indicating that the United States “is seeking to end the war on Putin’s conditions regardless of Ukraine’s interests.”

Stanley Rinshon, a professor of political science at the Graduate Studies Center at New York City University, said that Trump’s view of the meeting seemed to have been on the “big picture”, while Zelinski was focusing on the immediate goal of defending his country.

“The result is a clash of difficult views, if not impossible, success,” Rinshon said.

A deal or a deal

Zelinski later said he hoped that it would be possible to make a deal and confirmed that American support was vital to continuing to fight it.

On Saturday, he received a warmer welcoming in London from UK Prime Minister Kiir Starmer, who reaffirmed his “fixed” support for Ukraine.

Speaking to BBC on Sunday, Starmer said he felt “uncomfortable” to see the events in the Oval Office, adding, “No one wants to see it.”

The Prime Minister said that he is now focusing on behaving as a bridge between Zelinski and Trump and that he will work with France and Ukraine on a ceasefire plan to submit it to the United States.

Zelinski met with European leaders in London on Sunday, including Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, as they gathered for crisis talks to discuss support for Kev.
