Surprising things about living in Mexico as an American

  • We are the elderly who own a house in Mexico and rent in the United States. Living in Mexico came with surprises.
  • We appreciate how easily the products of the products in Mexico from the United States.
  • I was surprised by the extent of what I liked to go to the long buses and buy food in Mexico.

My husband and I rented an apartment in the original United States, but we also own a house in Mexico.

Over the past twenty years, we have divided our lives between our house in Guanajuato, Mexico, and renting us in Urika, California.

Although we traveled to Mexico several times before buying our house, living in the country is different from his visit.

I am now in the seventies of my age, and he is in his eighties – and we still make our cultural life work while continuing to be surprised and happy by our city and neighbors.

Here are some things that surprised me more about living in Mexico for the past two decades.

It is much easier to fix things in Mexico

I noticed that Mexico does not have a “terrible culture” like many United States. When something is broken here, trying to fix it is a priority, and it is often easy to do.

For example, when the two husband’s micro -desktop computer rejected it, the United States technology specialist said it could not be repaired. Instead of buying a new one, we brought it with us to Mexico, where a local computer store in Guanajuato installed it in two hours for $ 30.

In Mexico, it was easy for us to find small companies and local interest who would fix everything from electronics to clothes at a reasonable price.

I got my mixer motor in a local repair store and an alternative cover for my slowly broken cook made by a local craftsman.

I recently took my external jacket to Khayat in Mexico, who did a beautiful job that replaces the zipper for about $ 5. The same service is likely to cost at least three times in California.

Our healthcare costs are much lower than in the United States – but not everything is cheaper here

As the elderly over the age of 65, our Medicare in the United States helps us to obtain basic health care. However, it may be difficult to move in its changing policies and costs outside the pocket.

While you are in Mexico, it is easier and often more affordable to see specialists, such as dermatologists and dentists.

Two years ago, for example, my husband needed a complex and complicated procedure that would cost us about $ 3500 of his pocket in the United States-and he had to wait for months to make an appointment.

The procedure was made in Mexico for $ 600, and it took a date for less than two weeks.

Although our health care is generally less expensive here, not all health products. For example, we bring vitamins and ibuprofen sunscreen from the United States because they are usually more expensive to buy in Mexico.

Most of the restaurants we visit here stumbled with loud music and large groups of multi -generational families who have vital conversations.

The eating atmosphere in Mexico also tends to feel comfortable. We never felt pressure to eat quickly so that we could give up our table, and it is good to be able to spend our time.

Eating abroad can be leisurely, in fact, so that we sometimes have to search for the server to request our bill.

Food shopping was amazing and amazingly

I like to do the tasks on foot at Guanajuato – It is easy because the streets are in the city center where our house is infantry, colorful and vibrant.

I shop in particular because I had the opportunity to speak with the local population in Spanish and communicate with my community.

When I don’t stop at a local bakery (for fresh rollers), or wine store (for wine), or cafe (for large quantities coffee beans), I do most shopping in the grocery store only three minutes from our house.

Although they are small, with only three narrow corridors, they contain a lot of what we need: fruits, vegetables, canned food, spices, meat and dairy products.

Since the eggs are sold in large quantities, I can even buy only a few if I don’t need tens of full. I am also able to buy only one stick of butter instead of a larger package if you like.

Long -term buses were a special way to get around Mexico

Buses are one of the most popular transportation forms here – and we were surprised by pleasure, especially on long trips.

We love the long buses that we have made in Mexico so far allowed us to explore more countries.

One of our companies traveling with is Primra Plus, where our bus ride has been completed with sparkling seats, squares on the plane, and even WiFi.
