Sonic Labsthe team behind the highest-performing EVM L1 blockchain Sonic, has announced the launch of the Sonic DeFAI Hackathon, in partnership with Durahaxglobal hackathon organizer, and ZEREPROan autonomous artificial intelligence agent.
With $250,000 in prizes, the hackathon invites participants to compete over four weeks to create new AI agents that perform social and on-chain actions, further accelerating DeFAI (decentralized finance and artificial intelligence) development on Sonic.
Hackathon entries Open today, January 21, 2025, and will close on February 24, 2025. Winners will be announced in early March.
Enabling AI and Blockchain
DeFAI is a term that combines artificial intelligence technology and blockchain technology. For example, blockchain AI agents can handle complex tasks with simple commands, such as connecting assets, exchanging tokens, and depositing liquidity – all autonomously in a single step. Other AI agents may efficiently manage social media accounts and implement marketing strategies.
The ambition of the Sonic DeFAI Hackathon is to harness AI frameworks in ways that change how we interact with blockchain technology. From managing social media accounts to executing on-chain actions, AI agents have become the new frontier of blockchain innovation.

Application process and application guidelines
To participate, developers can visit Sonic Defy Hackathon Page On DoraHacks where the hackathon is hosted. Participants must follow the application process below.
- TimetableParticipants have four weeks to develop and complete their projects. The application deadline is February 21, 2025.
- Demo video: Each team must submit a three-minute demo video featuring their agent via YouTube, Vimeo, or Google Drive.
- Repository link: A link to the project code repository is required.
A panel of industry experts will evaluate and judge submissions, including: Michael Kong (CEO of Sonic Labs), Sage (Developer Relations, Sonic Labs), jiffy u (Founder of Zyrebro) Ayoub (Principal Engineer, ZEREPRO), W Daniele Siesta (Founder, Anon). Additional judges may be announced before the application deadline.
Entries will be judged using the following criteria:
- Technology implementation:Does the integration with Sonic demonstrate the quality of software development?
- design: Has the project’s user experience and design been thoughtfully and intuitively designed?
- Potential impact: What is the potential scale of the project’s impact on the blockchain industry?
- Quality of idea: How creative and distinctive is the project?
Prizes and prizes
Prizes worth a total of US$250,000 will be distributed to the winning projects across several categories:
- First place: $60,000
- Second place: $55,000
- Third place: $45,000
- Honorable Mentions (2): $15,000 each
In addition, many opportunities for additional prizes are available to all participants. The top three winners are also eligible for additional prizes if their agents fall into specific categories.

Throughout the hackathon, participants will have access to comprehensive guidance on developing ideas, AI frameworks, and project preparation. This includes technical support for ZerePyan open source Python framework developed by Zerebro for creating on-chain agents and social agents. Sonic Series is fully integrated with ZerePy for easy and efficient proxy building.
Winning teams will receive additional perks, including marketing exposure across Sonic Labs’ official social media channels and other promotional opportunities to help bring their customers to a larger audience.
