The sober travel is not the same; There are 5 things I do now differently
Almost five years ago, alcohol was separated. I did not know what this means for my daily life, but I knew that he would flow on my travel rhythm.
No more Bar Hotel Bar NightCaps. No bloody Mary in the middle of the trip. There are no longer a welcome tool after check -in.
I have been prepared for the least fun and less indulging. Yawning on sparkling water that is served in wine cups. But the surprise was that the sober travel turned out to be more clear, more vibrant and more feasible. I realized that it is not related to what I miss, it is about what I try.
Over time, I built some habits that help me stay on the ground, feel like me, and let me deal with each trip completely. This is what I do differently now.
1. I ask hotels to wipe the small bus before I arrive
In my first year of sobriety, I checked a beautiful hotel in Athens, Greece, and I immediately came to face with a glowing mini -trunk like a jewel box, packed with small gin bottles and cold white wine. After a long travel day, this small, bright colored refrigerator felt like daring.
Now, when I book a room, I ask in advance to empty mini. Most hotels are happy to absorb them – some even offer to replace alcohol with juices or snacks instead. It is a small step that takes the temptation from the table and makes my room feel like a real retreat, not the will of the will of the will.

2. I build early flights in the flight line
One of the most obvious privileges in sobriety? How can you feel good morning when you don’t breastfeed or search for ibuprofen in a foreign language.

It was based on this by planning adventures early in the morning, some of them became preferred memories, such as walking before dawn to the Galata bridge in Istanbul, where the fishermen had already delivered their lines, or crawled into bread 6 in the morning in Paris while the streets were turning into gold. In a Hawaiian resort, “this person” is completely – for every activity in the calendar, from sunga sung to cycling on the beach, all before most people eat their coffee.
Planning for private morning gives me a reason to skip the night pressing without fear of being lost; Instead, I spend space for something better. In addition, there is an electrical thing about seeing a waking place.
In Japan, I wandered into the Nishki market stalls in Kyoto just as they were open shutters, and the exchange of calm gestures and sleeping smiles with the owners of stores who are preparing for this day. With the steam height of Dashi utensils and the scent of sweet Bilban in the air – a thin cake – I felt as if I allowed me.

3. I have one line for social events
Travel means meeting new people inevitably, facing drinks. Early, stumbled through embarrassing interpretations. Now, keep it smooth and simple, like “I am good with what I have, thank you!” Or “I am cleansing.”
Most of the time, people do not care. I think those who do not my problem. Once, after refraining from a boat on the Greek islands, a traveler colleague raised a cup of wine and said: “Good, more for me”, and he was launched in the game Soliloquy about his failure in the failed month of January.
There is a line in my pocket less than persuading someone else and more than that about preventing myself from thinking about it.
4. Bring comfort elements with me
Again when hotel bars were routine for collapse, you were up to a kind of familiarity. Now, I deliberately pack the elements, so I do not end up searching for this feeling elsewhere: a favorite herbal tea supported in a load, podcast or an audible book, I only saved for nights of travel, and a magazine of the size of the palm trees emanating from the smell of German books in which I bought them.
They are small crews, but when I have undergone aircraft in an unfamiliar place, they fix me.

5. I still chase the indulgence
Although wine is no longer in the picture, I am not interested in depriving myself. So I am looking for what is special in every site I visit and chase the best versions of it.
These days, I trade cocktails for other indulgence, such as tracking the most silky Match in Kyoto, mixing the perfumes designated in Mexico City Atelier, and I wonder on foot in Bangkok that almost leave me.
Five years ago, I thought that giving up alcohol means giving up an essential part of my life on my travel – Martinis in the airport’s bars, which is a mysterious thing upon arrival. But it turns out that clarity has its own excitement.
Now I remember everything: The Velvet Hush when I was among the first visitors in Musée d’Orasay, the way the neighborhood was in Tokyo a smell like warm soy and steel, conversation with a woman who sold a delicious frying pan in a corner of Blaise.
The travel of sober did not reduce the world for me, so he expanded it.
