This exciting article is based on a conversation with Lavina Hawkins. It was released for length and clarity.
When I was nine years old, I got my first invitation to sleep. We just moved from Bronx to Virginia Beach. A birthday girl gave nice invitations to girls in my class. I knew that my mother would not allow me – that I would be the only one who would not be allowed to leave.
My mother was always Very strict about sleep. All my brothers knew that it was not a question – we were never allowed to stay in another person’s house. My mother faced things as a child, and wanted to protect us from the same occurrence.
When I told a birthday girl that I knew that I would not leave me, she said she could ask her mother to contact my mother. My mom called my mother and said that there will be no men or children at home to sleep. My mother admitted – I can go. I was euphoria. The invitation had a small list of what we would need, Including the sleep bag. Since I had no one, we bought one ready.
You are very excited. I was only I heard about sleep I saw them on TV, and looks really enjoyable.
Before I go, oh My mother told me that I can contact her If I do not feel safe or do not want to sleep anymore. You will be immediately to take me.
I called her, and came as I promised
When I arrived, most girls were known there, along with a few members of the girl’s family. The mother ordered a pizza, which was a fun time.
After the pizza, we went up to the upper floor, and while I got to the top, the cousin of the Christmas girl pushed me to the wall. After that, I started talking about how my braids were ugly, and asked me why I had my hair. Everyone began to continue the progress of his cousin mocked my hair.
Lavina Hawkins called her mother several times all over her life when she needed help.

I did not fight again, but I ran on the basement and told the mother. I called all the girls on the basement and tried to deal with it, but when I went back to the upper floor, the radio was silent. No one talks to me. I will become strange. I felt dismay to exclude after her invitation.
All I can think about is my mother’s phone.
I went to the basement and used the home phone to call it.
I said: “My mother, come, bring me.”
“I am on my way,” she replied.
She did not ask what happened – she just said she was coming. I felt safe.
After a few minutes, I knocked on the door, got my things and left with it.
Once we were in the car, I asked what happened. Sometimes she told me that people are afraid of what they do not know. She said everything is fine – I was safe. We went out to the ice cream and then saw the movies together.
She reminded me that it will always look when needed
Throughout our childhood, my mother continued to say the same thing for myself and my siblings – that she would come to capture if we feel insecurity and needed it.
I remember when I was in high school, I was outside friends of friends and everyone was drinking. One person said they would lead us. I said I will call my mother to come to me. The friend who was with him did not want me, but I told her that it does not matter where we or what we were doing; My mom will come, without asking one question.
My mother came and got me. It ended with friends whose car refused to reach a car accident that night. The driver died.
Years later, when my second child was a few months old, I was suffering from depression after birth. I woke up one morning and felt dismay, such as checking. I didn’t want to feed my child.
But I was not ashamed to contact my mother. You will not judge me. She just came. “My mom, come, bring me,” I told her over the phone. She knew from my voice that something had stopped.
“I am on the way,” she said. Keep me on the phone until I got to my house.
With my five children, I told them the same thing that my mother used to tell me. They can always contact me, and I will give them, regardless of where they are.
