I tried Stepin, an application that makes you walk to earn a screen time
- STEPPIN is the latest application by Kayak founder, Paul English.
- The application limits the use of the phone by encouraging users to clock steps to unlock the screen time.
- I tried it for a week, and I noticed that it was the latest in the morning routine.
Over the past few years, similar New Year decisions have been set to reduce screen time. I tried to set time limits, keep my phone out of view, and delete social media applications.
None of them did ever. With the average daily screen time for more than five hours, I can call a chronic Gen Zers colleague online. And social media, not surprising, takes the largest part of my time.
When I learned that the new iOS app called Stepin – created by the founder of the Kayaak Ball Engelich – aims to help people “escape from scrolling”, you were fascinated.
I tested the application for a week
Stepin combines the goals of scoring steps and restricting screen time. The more steps you take, the more time is given to use your restricted applications.
Each user can set their parameters. I decided to restrict two of the most timing applications: Instagram and Tiktok. For every 100 steps I took, I gave myself one minute of use on my restricted applications. The acquired time will be reset every day.
Users can choose applications that must be restricted (left) and define their borders.

I spent my first day at home.
Usually, I use my evening to relax by passing social media. But on that day, by 5 pm, I only followed 200 steps. With just two minutes to pass, I decided to walk to a nearby garden instead.
When I finished, you have gone more than 2000 steps, equivalent to 20 minutes from screen time. Seeing the number jumping number gave me dopamine rush.
Users can choose the amount of their acquired time to use in their restricted applications.

At the end of the day, I built credit and I can choose the amount of time gained to spend on my restricted applications.
I used the application for a week. The biggest change was that I stopped passing social media once I wake up; I couldn’t, because I did not record the required steps on that day. I felt a recovery and ended up with the most productive morning.
By the end of the week, the average screen time decreased for about two hours.
How to work
Stepin is not the first app designed to reduce screen time. Qustodio Parental, which was released in 2012, allows parents to prohibit applications and set the daily screen limits. The forest, which was released the following year, grows virtual trees during focus sessions. If users leave the application, the tree begins to die.
There are also built -in applications that allow users to set daily limits. Apple Screen Time is an advantage over iPhone and digital luxury, which was developed by Google, on most Android devices.
Paul Inge, CEO of Boston Vetcher And founder The Kayak Insider’s travel search engine has told the idea that Stepin has arisen on a family trip to Spain.
During the trip, the English fiancé at the time, Rachel Cohen, and his son, Mike Inch, discussed ways to reduce the screen time.
The other two are restricted to the idea. “The idea really came from Michael and Rachel more than me. He said English.
“There should be something outside your phone to manage phone addiction,” said the younger English language, 29, producer and designer at Boston Venture Studio, told Bi:
He said about the inspiration behind the application: “It is clear that almost everyone is doing.
The application was released last month and is free in the application store, although they are planning to charge annual subscription fees of about $ 20. Stepin is not yet available on Google Play, but Android users can subscribe to waiting list.
“We have several thousand downloads, which is great since we have just released the application two weeks ago and we have not started any marketing yet,” said Elder English. He refused to give a specific download number.
Why might work STEPPIN – or no –
“STEPPIN can appeal to users who are to set short -term goals with immediate rewards.
Assuming that the screen time is a “highly rewarding” activity, its peer with behavior “is good for you” can help people overcome self -deficiency. “This application may be a nice reminder of the move, but more importantly, it breaks the usual behaviors and turns attention.”
But Rotlidge said that the effectiveness of the application will depend on the user’s motives, adding that users may become frustrated or lose interest as soon as it explodes modernity.
Some experts also expressed their concerns about an advantage that allows users to exceed the time of the screen time in emergency situations.
Melissa Hunt, a clinical psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, said that the application may be effective at the beginning in making people more aware of the screen time by helping them to pay attention. “But in general, technological solutions to technology problems will always be a problem with their nature,” she said.
Mike Engelich said The option to overcome restrictions has been included to give users more flexibility.
It took self -discipline to prevent myself from exaggerating the restrictions when I run out of time. But the restriction of the use of social media did not prevent me from tampering with my phone when I had nothing to do. I found myself attracted to other applications – usually ended in NYT Games to play “Spelling Bee” tours.
