I got out of the Faculty of Law to start a snack brand. Here is my advice.

I am Chris Huang, the founder of the golden duck. In 23 years, she came out of the Faculty of Law to start the brand of snacks, which, after a decade, was now sold in more than 3000 stores all over the world.

We started small. In 2015, we launched only one product – salted egg yolk chips.

Initially, our ability was so limited that we made products in a home kitchen. As a result, we can only make about 50 packs of chips per day.

When you started to become more popular in Singapore, we expanded the scope of work.

The addition of employees, quality maintaining, and control of operations when we reduced some of the most challenging parts of our trip.

We also wandered in many storms. The epidemic was a very bad time to work, and all tourism revenues evaporated overnight. We had to reduce our workforce from 200 to 120, and tell friends that we had brought them that we would not be able to work together.

10 years ago my experience in Duck Duck Golden Management, here are five tips of providing anyone who is thinking about starting a new brand.

1. Start and test cheap

If you are thinking about it and you did not yet, you only have to start.

You don’t have to leave your work. You can do something on weekends, but start building a road map.

Nothing prevents you from testing it now. You do not have to spend thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in building things, especially in the era of artificial intelligence.

So, if you have a dream, start.

You may fail in the beginning. This is actually the start of my fifth operation, but the failures gave me fire to continue putting my back in it and making crazy hours.

And when you start, test with the lowest possible capital.

I have seen people starting in companies with $ 5,000 and running in millions of dollars in revenue now. I have seen people starting from business, while others have expanded a huge scope.

I think people do not do this enough. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to test the idea of ​​work.

2. Know your customer

Really know your customer.

It falls in love with them, giving them a name, knowing their whereabouts, and they have a complete idea of ​​how to spend their budgets, and what are the things they care about

With this method, we found success in Singapore, Hong Kong and some other markets. However, to expand the scope of this world, we need to determine this customer so that we can talk to them.

Our target customer is 30 years old. It does not need to drive a car, but some do it. She lives 15 minutes from the center of Singapore.

She loves her food. It is very active on social media, whether it is Instagram or Tiktok, and she loves to share the best parts of her food trips. She has big dreams.

You should be specified about who your customers are effectively marketing for them.

3. Creating for your customer, not yourself

You have to innovate what the consumer wants, not what you want.

I like to eat snacks. Often, I am my client, but not always. Do I have the same taste buds as Italians? Or the French? Me, no.

And I need to know this. So, if you go to those markets and try these products and see what their best sales are, then I know what I follow.

Then my challenge is, can I make my product better for you, not better for me?

4. Today, originality is the king

People around the world create real experiences.

We all know what is the taste of sour cream and onions, and we all know what the taste of barbecue. But why do you not have a sour cream and a churchha, one of our latest flavors in the chips box that we launched in 2024?

Now, everyone knows what the flavor of the truffle is, but why doesn’t you have a wagyu truffle? Again, this is one of the flavors we fired.

I see a trend that people do not search for only once experiences. They are looking for interesting new foodstuffs.

Therefore, I think there is a very strong situation not only for Asian flavors but all flavors from all over the world. There is a great opportunity there.

5. Small failure, quickly correct

I know that many entrepreneurs have shared the advice of small failure, so I will not overcome this cylinder anymore. I think everyone knows what that means.

But the correction after failure is very important. So you fail small, and what? Do you just sit there and say, “It didn’t work?” no.

Entrepreneurship is all about development. Most companies do not find their position up to two to two years.

This means that you must repeat. Well – your customer may not like it in this way. They may like them with more salt. Maybe they do not like chips. They may want a package of potatoes instead of chips.

If you do not correct them after each of these small failures, you will call them very early.

Because entrepreneurship is like life. The whole thing is about development, change and growing.
