I am a former Google and Meta-Meta-I preferred the most exhausted job

This exciting article depends on the conversation with Ritendra Datta, a software engineer based in the San Francisco Bay area. It was released for length and clarity.

She worked in Google from 2010 to 2019, then moved to Meta for a little more than four years.

If you look strictly from an engineering perspective, my first few years in Google was the best in my career. The company felt very task, and it was inspired as a building.

In Meta, I worked more than hours and witnessed higher levels of stress, but not necessarily badly. In fact, work in Meta was generally better than working in Google.

I loved Google, but I saw the company’s culture change

My first years in Google had a rare mixture of being good financier and a task driven, not profit. Google was slow, fixed and cautious with everything that was put forward. I knew the peculiarities and generalities of everything my team was working on.

I spent the first four years working outside the Google Pittsburgh office, where we had foosbal tables, dining options and areas to hang. No one was interested if I only spent an hour or two in jamming with colleagues in the music room, and I liked it.

I think the company was betting that inspiring engineers with goodwill Sibnion are wonderful things regardless of whether they were working 10 hours or four.

Google felt completely different when I moved to the Mountain View office

I have turned into the Google Mountain View office because I am tired of winter on the eastern coast and I reckon there will be more opportunities. This site had amenities such as swimming pools and volleyball playgrounds, but people looked more heads and focused on work. I think this is partially due to the differences between the eastern coast and the silicon valley, partly due to a cultural shift within the company towards overcoming competition.

After nearly a decade, I began to feel satisfied. I was repeating the same tasks, cooperating with the same people, and I no longer learn. I left Google in the end and accepted a offer with Meta in 2019 due to increased wages and growth hopes as an engineer.

I started working in Meta and immediately felt the difference

The Meta logo at the time of its use was “moving quickly and breaking things”, and I felt it immediately. The second I felt that I understood something, they say: “Let us go, let’s give up this, let’s change the priorities.” We have often failed, but the amount that we invented exceeds.

I felt good tension when we designed to build a convincing product, and our motives were clear. On the other hand, I felt poor pressure when I did not understand the motive behind some strategic transformations and they will have to mobilize my team behind a strict schedule that I did not understand.

I think many people who come from Google never adapt to this change, but I think I am well adapted.

I suffered from fatigue in both companies, in completely different ways

Somewhere in the middle of my Google career, I started anxiety, I was behind the knees. Outside, it looked as if I had a shiny profession, but what people do not see is spots of very slow progress and extreme frustration. The pressure I felt in my career was burned.

The exhaustion that I had in Meta was for ethical reasons. In 2021, Meta was under audit when one of the informed of the amounts provided huge documents on hate speech and the wrong information that Meta allowed. This made me wonder if I was fighting the correct battle and building a better society.

I had a lot of doubts about my career and I didn’t even want to go to work despite a large operating team.

Promotional offers worked differently in Google and Meta

Google’s promotion was fair, but it became more competitive, especially after she moved to the Mountain View office. I will create an upgrade package with my manager, then a completely independent group of the upper leadership will work to review it.

In Meta, the people who decided to promote me either or both sides of my organization were. In addition, it was not only important to do a good job, but you also have to market your business.

We had an internal version of Facebook as people publish their accomplishments, causing a lot of competition. I fully realized my team’s vision because our work marketing was the same as the importance of doing this.

I have developed a muscle to constantly think about vision, and I don’t think it was in a good way.

Meta closes the sprays more than Google

The counter -feeding process was very strong in Meta. Everyone made notes on everyone, and if one person was a great tremor, then their career will be affected by it.

In addition, engineering levels were hidden for all except for some pivotal employees, such as a manager or vice president, so there was no final hierarchical sequence.

In Google, the focus was less on how much you cooperated and more in the artwork you did. People were very public about their compatibility, which means that they may benefit from their highest position to overcome decisions.

I preferred dead against Google

My first years in Google were amazing. But when I consider influence, influence and cash gain, Meta was generally the best.

Nevertheless, she left Meta in 2023 and accepted an offer to start a startup. I am happy where I am now, but I really think that the two companies can be great places to work.
