Waymo recently showed the reason why the company believed that it is necessary to have Lidar and other sensors outside the cameras in order to provide a safer Robotaxi service.
During a presentation at Google I/O on Wednesday, Co-COO DMITRI DOLONGOT showed some situations in which you can discover the special Waymo radar system and pedestrian photography radar before the cameras picked them down.
The current independent five -generation Waymo car is equipped with five Lidars, six radar sensors, and 29 cameras.
One of the scenarios included a Wimo car during the dirt storm in Phoenix, which can occur during the seasonal wind season in Arizona.

Since the photography radar depends on radio waves to detect things and people on the road, Waymo was able to discover the presence of a pedestrian before they appear on the cameras. Dolgov said at the Google I/O conference that the sensors only provide “noisy and sometimes noisy measurements for the world around you.”
