How to help radar and Lidar in Waymo know what cameras cannot

Waymo recently showed the reason why the company believed that it is necessary to have Lidar and other sensors outside the cameras in order to provide a safer Robotaxi service.

During a presentation at Google I/O on Wednesday, Co-COO DMITRI DOLONGOT showed some situations in which you can discover the special Waymo radar system and pedestrian photography radar before the cameras picked them down.

The current independent five -generation Waymo car is equipped with five Lidars, six radar sensors, and 29 cameras.

One of the scenarios included a Wimo car during the dirt storm in Phoenix, which can occur during the seasonal wind season in Arizona.

Lidar from Waymo can be picked up with a pedestrian in a dirt storm – a position that can blur the camera’s view.

On one slide, Dolgov showed two frames of the same image-one of which was taken through “high-resolution, high-resolution, and other waymo’s lidar.

“You can see more clearly that there is a pedestrian standing on the side of the road,” he said. “So imagine that they will go on our way. This early detection can really make a big difference in how this situation is shown.”

Another scenario in San Francisco showed one of the first cities in which the company allowed its robotics.

The video shown above showed how Waymo photography radar can discover a pedestrian via a robotics camera width by a bus.

Since the photography radar depends on radio waves to detect things and people on the road, Waymo was able to discover the presence of a pedestrian before they appear on the cameras. The yellow point is the photography radio radio waves that discover the activity of the object – in this case a human infantry.

The footage showed the stop on the road when the pedestrians entered the middle of the road to cross the street.

“The sensors” complete each other very well and give us repetition. “

Waymo sensors is a specific feature of Jaguar White robots that now calm down through the ways of many major American cities. Lidars, sensors, and cameras are significantly protruding from the outside of the car, including Lidar sits on the surface of Waymo like the hat.

The company, including its founder Sebastian Thrun, as well as many industry experts, says that Lidar is necessary for a safe experience for itself.

Tesla is one of the leading sounds that contradict this traditional wisdom. Lidar has used limited purposes, including data collection, but to expand robotics, CEO Elon Musk Lidar was distinguished as an expensive “crutch”.

“The problem with Waymo cars is that it costs Waymo’s money,” Musk said during the Tesla profits call in the first quarter of April.

Tesla was assigned to compete with Waymo in June when he was appointed to publish 10 to 20 robots in Austin. Tesla spokesman did not respond to the comment.

Dolgov said at the Google I/O conference that the sensors only provide “noisy and sometimes noisy measurements for the world around you.”

“The whole matter is due to artificial intelligence to explain all these data and make good leadership decisions,” he said.
