I left a great law for Firmound, and I was never happier

This exciting article depends on the conversation with Nico Beedle, 41 years old, a lawyer who lives in London and the happiest company in 2016. She now has more than 70 lawyers. The following was released for brevity and clarity.

My career started in a large international company in the city, then I moved to a more traditional company, but still is very large. Both are very good, but when I was in my early thirties, I was really tired of being a lawyer.

Adam Mirli, my partner, has created a law firm because he needs legal services for some of his other commercial interests.

Like me, Adam was tired of being a lawyer because he felt that he had a little control of his work and was not properly rewarded for his time.

At that point, he was my friends about 20 years ago. I left a law to unify what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Adam asked if I wanted to be a consultant on the side, and I agreed.

In a traditional law firm, you have a partnership that people own at the top. They employ everyone. Then the owners take the profits, minus the general expenses.

Adam’s point of view, in terms of what we will do as a company, was to use the fees sharing model where lawyers are greatly motivated to do what they do, which is unusual in the legal market. This makes us different from the vast majority of other companies.

Suddenly, Adam was really enjoying being a lawyer again, because instead of someone raising some of the works on your office and saying: “Do this,” she was a case of someone who says, “Do you want X thousands of pounds to do this work for me?”

About a decade ago, Adam said that we should adhere to this full time – and know if others want to work with us on the same basis.

What distinguishes us

Our model, in short, is that we have a great operating team that are our employees. Then we recruit senior lawyers, who do not leave, and instead we take 75 % of what they call. On the contrary, traditional companies tend to pay about 25 % to 30 % of what someone describes as a salary.

Regarding how the world changes and how I think people look at their career, the traditional model was a large condition, “You are doing your time and will be rewarded” – to the extent that you are exaggerated.

I think the millennial generation is like me and Gen Z is generally less prepared to make this trade, which is to obtain less control early in their career in the hope of getting returns.

Now, as soon as you make a partner, you still have to work hard, if not more difficult. Again a day, perhaps the partners were in the bar or in the golf course.

A few years ago, someone truly likened him to: in traditional law, to become a partner like a pie competition where the prize is the most pancake. If you become a partner for stocks, you make a lot of money, but no one of your feet of gas.

My point is that the professions and where people work are more liquid than it was. People are not looking to work on their way to the rest of their lives. I think, in general, people are less willing to deal with suffering and unhealthy levels of tension in particular.

In our company, it is useful to know that you are not judged by the criteria and that you are only doing something for your own. We have some wonderful lawyers who are parents of young children who may make 20 % bills compared to a person who is at all and wants to join our model because they will take a lot of money.

Each of these individuals is equally important in terms of action culture. Many early appointments were through our flexible work platform, which rejoiced women at the workplace. It is very difficult for women after you returned to children to a large law, especially at the highest level, because you may search for fixed hours, you may search for four days a week. This is not a criticism of these companies, but the nature of our industry does not prefer these types of conditions.

We say to someone, “Do what you feel comfortable with,” and they fit their lives.

Find happiness

Many people who joined us have friends with the former people of people who were already working for us. It has grown well over the past ten years. We can be at least two or three times on this size if we take a more aggressive employment policy and may have brought down the quality levels a little.

The fact that we have maintained high quality and tend to employ people whom our lawyers already know that they are really useful with the cultural aspect of things.

Recently, one of our lawyers came to me and asked me if I could carry something for him. He did the same when I asked. But compared to traditional law firms, it does not put anything on my office and I do not want to do it. I will make some money from it, and it is not necessary to take over more works that make it more tense. It is like adult trade.

If I ask my friends or family what I seem to have done in my life since I changed jobs, this is completely different. This wavy effect of misery in your work is huge.
