The “re -armament era” where Europe turns into defensive spending taps

  • The European Union has announced plans to enhance defense spending, amid increasing security concerns on the continent.
  • The plan follows reports that President Donald Trump has stopped US military aid to Ukraine.
  • The European Union strategy includes loans and spending flexibility, but it does not mention the problems of productive capabilities.

The European Union revealed a plan on Tuesday to enhance the spending of member states on spending on the “re -armament era”.

European Commission President Ursula von der Layen said that the European Restore plan can open 800 billion euros (about 840 billion dollars) of money.

This announcement was followed late on Monday that President Donald Trump had ordered the stopping of US military aid to Ukraine after a fiery oval office meeting with President Voludmir Zelinsky.

European leaders met in London on Sunday for the emergency summit in Ukraine. Many defense commentators believe it will be difficult for European countries to fill the gap the size of the United States in military support.

The European Union plan focuses on ways to help member states open financing for defense spending, for both “immediate” defense for Ukraine and in the long term.

It includes the suspension of excessive deficit – a mechanism that usually prevents member states from going to a large deficit.

Low -cost loans will be available at a value of 150 billion euros to allow governments to “request” the national team and buy defense, air artillery and missiles jointly, drone missiles and anti -baron systems, as well as electronic capabilities.

“The question is no longer whether European security is threatened in a very real way, or whether Europe should take more responsibility for its security,” said von der Layen. “In fact, we have long known the answers of these questions.”

The plans did not deal with the European Union’s defense production capacity, or the issue of seizing frozen Russian assets worth more than $ 200 billion. Some European leaders are preparing an idea to help defend Ukraine.
