The Nigerian government has regained approximately $ 60 million of assets seized from the United States since the Tigran Gambaryan executive. The local company Media Outlet Times revealed this, noting that it is part of the issues of the issuance.

Part of these conditions had the United States to issue some of the money seized to the Nigerian government. According to what the authorities in the West African country demanded the release of the United States about 380 million dollars of assets for Nigeria. This money was mostly linked to corruption issues against Nigerian political leaders, and Nigeria was trying to restore it for years.

Among them are 53 million dollars from the confiscation of property in the case of the former Minister of Petroleum, Disani Alison Madik and about $ 150 million linked to former military heads of state Sani Abasha, who has been frozen in France since 2012. The US government has also seized about 160 million euros from a former governor of Nigeria.

So far, some of this money has been launched for Nigeria. According to the report, the US Country Provincial Court in East California ordered $ 6.02 million connected to a weapons deal that occurred a decade ago to Nigeria. The United States seized the money at the time because the weapons broker rented by the Nigerian government had no active license.

The $ 52.88 million associated with Alison-Madueke was released, with Nigerian officials and American Ambassador to Nigeria Richard Mills Junior on the asset return agreement on January 10, 2025.

Under the agreement, Nigeria will spend $ 50 million on a rural electrical project through the World Bank. The remaining $ 2.88 million will go to the International Institute of Justice (IIJ) as a grant that supports the draft law and combating terrorism.

Nigeria and the United States depth their partnership due to the launch of Gambarian

Meanwhile, Gambaryan’s launch also strengthened the partnership between the United States and Nigerian governments. One of the terms of the release was that it would be considered a diplomatic gesture between the United States and Nigeria.

This has already happened, as the authorities stated that the release was on a humanitarian basis. Since then, bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United States have improved, especially with regard to cooperation to treat financial drugs and electronic devices.

On the same day of the release of Gambaryan, the American embassy in Nigeria launched the bilateral communication group in the United States in illegal financing and encrypted currencies. Through this group, the US Department of Justice assists law enforcement agencies in Nigeria to build the ability to investigate and trial these crimes.

However, it is certain whether the strong bilateral relationship between Nigeria and the United States will continue under the new administration. Since Donald Trump has been right as president, there have been comprehensive changes to US foreign policy, including with its allies.
