Brattleboro family creates cryptocurrency inspired by cats

BURLINGTON, Vermont (WCAX) – While the virtual world of cryptocurrency is complex and ever-evolving, one Vermont family is trying to bring a piece of home to the blockchain.
The Hyde family cat, Odin, spends his days sleeping and wandering between houses in the Brattleboro neighborhood. “It’s handsome, it’s mean, it’s very decentralized,” Matthew Hyde said.
But now you can also get a sneak peek at the cat in his new home online. “I am not an active trader. I buy and support coins that I believe will do well and thrive,” Hyde said.
The family is now actively staking Odin, a cat meme coin, on Cardano, a community-driven cryptocurrency and database. The family was trying to increase the cat’s popularity through social media and thought he was perfect for digital artwork for their coins. “We chose Odin because we liked him, and I’m sure others will too,” said Thomas Hyde, a Brattleboro High School graduate and current first-year student at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. He is pursuing a degree in financial technology and says his father’s interest in cryptocurrencies sparked his curiosity. “I thought making more money with my money was a good decision, and I’ve followed suit ever since.”
The Hydes say that while they make Odin the face of their digital creativity, the goal is more than just potential profits. “At the end of the day, if this doesn’t work out, it’s a good experience for him. It’s a project we’re doing as a family, so I think we’ve already won, so to speak,” Matthew said.
“We just want to immortalize Odin on the blockchain. The other thing we like to say is, if you can’t hold Odin physically, you can hold him digitally,” Thomas said.
