Books do not make you smarter. It makes you useful

Reading has always been a source of enjoyment and frustration for me. AI recently lit a sign “What about” on that (Al -Mutsad: There is a good answer)

To read: A foolish foolish pursuit?

I was always a thirsty reader. My parents had a library from floor to the ceiling (which they read). My primary school and the hometown of the real places we went to. In my twenties, I moved from excitement and science fiction to classics and modernity, and then to a non -imaginary. I used to read at a pace about a monthly book.

In a smart survey of 2017, Emily Timbel analyzed reading trends in the United States and the results were to three categories: the ordinary reader (about 12 books annually), the fierce reader (50 books per year) and the super reader (80 books annually). She was interested in the number of books that a person would read for life – but I will soon argue – I think she was asking the wrong question.

Small human activity shift

From strategic forgetfulness to trained models

Many people, books, knowledge, reading and a lot of forgetfulness. Do we all make entertainment in education?

If this seems familiar with a recent article I read about artificial intelligence, it may not be a coincidence. There are similarities between the “trained artificial intelligence model” and “a good person” (leave “intelligence” aside as I think it has nothing to do with any case). The more information you feed both – the better in generalization around the world. But the similarities should not be more than an extension. The trained artificial intelligence model “remembers” more details as a secondary product to train it on a real text while the human brain does not do so. It only maintains the “train”.

If AI’s reading improves its abilities to generalize (implicit memory), similar to humans and her consent at one time its capabilities known to all (explicit memory), where do you leave? Dumility of development?

Maybe not.

Since secondary reading products (generalization, logic and facts) are not accompanied by motivation, curiosity, initiative, necessity and invention. Artificial intelligence may have answers, but he does not know what to ask.

Even with completely forgetting the details, or perhaps because of it, the person will read well in an interesting position when you come to work with artificial intelligence. Humans who have fungal drives and a trained view of the world, will make more effectively mock a fully known logic machine. The trained person gets better results using Google Maps because what matters is not the ability to read the map, use a compass, calculate the steps and remember the road numbers. What matters is a will to go, know what you are looking for and the ability to get to know a good location.

Not on the same book

There is something else that we have ignored so far.

AIS does not read the same books that humans do. The reason is most of the books are owned. AIS is not allowed to read it for training (copyright for personal, not commercial use). Suppose for a minute this is the case. We have a new paradox. Humans train their mental models on books and then forget the details, while AIS is trained in general data, building a model that maintains different details. How can a person with a model and motivation consult a tool about the details he does not know?
